In Summary

  • Hygiene is crucial for any restaurant. Well, you can be happy to know that there is one restaurant in Nairobi that will put your worries to ease.
  • The Oasis, in Southern Sun Mayfair, was recently certified by SGS (a leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company) for its high standards of hygiene in the kitchen. We recently visited the restaurant and with the guidance of Paul Norman, the General Manager, sampled the buffet menu.
  • Overlooking the refreshing pool and set in a friendly, casual atmosphere we were curious to know what Oasis offered the public. Open for lunch, from midday to 2.30pm, the buffet, priced at Sh1,950, is quite impressive.
  • It boasts a wide array of fresh salads, special soup of the day, and starters. You’re welcome to fill your plate as many times as you wish, provided you have some room for the rest of the dishes.
  • There is a wide range of main dishes including spinach in cream sauce, mildly spiced ndengus (lentils), and an option of either rice or chapati. The meats are quite juicy, my favourite being the lamb, which was rich in flavour and tender. The chefs then pile for you hot barbecued pork chops.
  • Service is quick, with the staff to attend to you and clear the table. The desserts are not to be missed. A rich mix of cakes.

Most people if asked, will tell you that the quality of a restaurant is measured by the food, the service, ambiance or even the overall experience they had. However all these are true, there is one aspect that is always highly overlooked or even assumed, that is hygiene.

We seldom know what goes on behind the large busy kitchens as long as we are assured of an attractively served meal at the table.

Other than lunch Oasis is opened for breakfast - as early as 4am, for the early bird. Guests can sit inside the restaurant or around the swimming pool, the ideal place for a sundowner. So you have no excuse not to drop by and experience what this classic hotel has to offer.
