The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), which waged a protracted campaign for the return of Lufthansa, says reintroducing Frankfurt-Nairobi direct passenger flights will help tourism recovery.

After an 18-year absence the German carrier is expected to resume flights on October 27.

“This is bound to have a positive impact on Kenya’s tourism sector considering Germany is one of our key source markets,” said KTB managing director Muriithi Ndegwa in a statement on Thursday.

He added that flights by Lufthansa would enhance Nairobi’s status as a regional hub.

Tourism PS Ibrahim Mohamed led the Kenyan delegation in Germany that lobbied for the return of the flights.

Mr Ndegwa said Lufthansa’s network in Europe and the Americas would support marketing efforts.

Germany has not issued any travel advisories against Kenya over insecurity like the US and UK over insecurity linked to terror attacks in parts of the country.

Lufthansa will deploy an Airbus A340-300 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

“It’s not just the German market that we will be targeting but also countries where Lufthansa flies to,” said Mr Ndegwa.

“We are currently implementing a global marketing campaign as part of tourism sector recovery efforts and the decision by Lufthansa is, therefore, timely.”
