What you need to know:

  • Craft beer is slowly becoming popular in Kenya with the likes of Sierra Brassiere also brewing their own Sierra beer brands.

I’m no beer drinker. It fills me up and bloats me out. And I don’t like the beer belch. Plus the bottles are too heavy. I could go on and on about why I don’t drink beer but I admire the dedication of chaps who love beer, so I won’t say too much.

I also love how beer looks in a tall glass, sitting there with a foamy hat on its head asking to be downed. Apparently beer isn’t just beer; Tuskers taste differently from Pilsners. Who would have thought?

Now there is draft beer. Apparently, it’s the new cool kid of premium beers.

Brew Bistro brews its own beer under Big Five Breweries (the company that owns Brew Bistro). They invited me to try out their craft beers. This was after they won a prestigious craft beer award in Berlin, Germany.

Popular

The Global Association of Craft Beer Brewers hosted the Global Craft Beer Awards two months ago where 68 international breweries submitted over 300 entries of draft beer which was judged by a jury of 34 international members.

Big Five Breweries submitted three beers and one of them – the Simplis, Pilsner lager – won in its category. Of course, it’s a big deal to win that award, a humble brewery in Kenya taking the day among more established international breweries is a great reason to toast.

I tasted this now famous Pilsner and it would be unfair to comment on the drink since I know nothing about beer. But my friend thought it was something. Craft beer is slowly becoming popular in Kenya with the likes of Sierra Brassiere also brewing their own Sierra beer brands.

Custom-made

While still not at the commercial level of selling their beers to supermarket outlets like Sierra does, Brew Bistro is slowly branching into brewing establishments like Sankara with their own custom-made craft beers.

Aleem Ledak, the man behind Big Five Breweries told me that the demand is rising as the number of middle-class earners increase. But beer or no beer, Brew Bistro is a place for good fun.

On Mondays, you can bring your own wine from the Wine Shop downstairs and have no corkage charge. On Tuesday you can build your own burger. Salsa is on Wednesday and Thursdays are jazz days. On Fridays, there is a deejay to rock the decks and Sundays they introduced the service industry night where those in the service industry show their work identification and get some ridiculous discounts on drinks.

Those nights have become popular.
