City Hall is set to build 97 early childhood schools and a street children rehabilitation centre as it expands investment in social programmes to address some of the county’s woes.

County secretary Lilian Ndegwa has given interested firms up to March 12 to submit bids for the projects which also include upgrading the Joseph Kang’ethe Social Hall in Woodley.

The new early childhood development (ECD) centres would be built in 85 wards of Nairobi.

“Prices quoted should be net inclusive of all taxes, and delivery costs, must be in Kenya shillings and shall remain valid for 120 days from the closing date of the tender,” she said.

The move follows recommendation by the Nairobi County Education task force report released mid last year which stated that the city needs 120 new such institutions.

The county has 21 standalone ECD centres and 186 pre-units attached to primary schools serving less than 10 per cent of children in Nairobi, the task force said in the report.

The task force report also recommended that all existing ECD centres be renovated and well equipped to serve 300 children per school, including those with physical disabilities.

Governor Evans Kidero appointed the task force after most of the county’s public schools ranked poorly in the 2013 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examinations.

A street children rehabilitation centre would, however, be built in Ruai to cater for the rising number of street families whose population the city is growing.

The Ruai centre is expected to rid the city of street families who are mostly blamed for high incidence of crime in Nairobi.

In a tender notice, Ms Ndegwa said the rehabilitation centre would cost the county government Sh200 million.

A Unicef report released in 2007 estimated that there are more than 60,000 street children in Nairobi.
