What you need to know:

  • It’s the kind of place you show up at around midnight, when you have already had a few to drink and you want to dance. It has an electric ambience as the night wears on.

Whatever happened to Kidum? Does anyone know? I heard he was at Club Hypnotica beginning of this month. No doubt still singing his usual hits. Still wowing the crowd. He needs new songs now. He really does.

But talking of Club Hypnotica, it’s this nightclub in Woodvale Grove in Westlands. On Krishna Building, right above Aqua Blue Lounge. It’s not a bar, as far as bars go. It’s a nightclub, which means a lot of glittering lights and a dance floor. It looks slightly raffish on the inside and somewhat roughish on the outside.

It’s the kind of place you show up at around midnight, when you have already had a few to drink and you want to dance. It has an electric ambience as the night wears on. It’s not only soundproof but has very sexy bubble light technology.

There is a deejay deck overlooking the dance floor (do they ever overlook anything but?) where most likely, you will find DJ Sanju and DJ Aisha rocking the night. The club touts DJ Aisha as the first female deejay in Westlands. I know people who will contest this.

Thursdays are Afro Fusion night and one of their best nights because they invite a band or artist to perform. They have free cocktails between 9pm and 11pm but I don’t have to tell you to ignore those free cocktails, do I?

I was recently there for the launch of Viceroy’s national consumer promotion “One Viceroy, Five Friends” that will send 60 lucky winners to South Africa to visit the house of Van Ryns in Cape Town. This three-month promotion (runs between September 1 and November 30).

That night was unique because the deejay played tracks while drummers did their thing. Apparently, it’s common fare at this club, where a violinist plays to a deejay mix. I have only seen this in South Africa, so it was pretty cool to see that seeping into our clubs.

Parking isn’t too bad. You will pay for it, though. Woodvale Grove isn’t one of those places I die to go to, though. It’s too hectic. Too loud. Too busy. And quite often too young, depending on which bar or club you end up in.

Try out this club though, especially on Thursdays. The crowd isn’t half bad, either, on those nights.
