The National Construction Authority (NCA) on Thursday shut down 50 sites in Mombasa for flouting rules and ordered the contractors to apply for approvals.

Officials found tenants living in some of the buildings under construction, oblivious of the danger they exposed themselves to.

In others there were businesses operating on the ground floor as construction was ongoing on the upper floors.

Mr Chrispus Ndinyo, an officer with the authority said the sites would remain closed until proper documents were obtained from NCA and those who continue with construction would be charged in court.

He said the developers were not adhering to minimum rules for construction sites, including providing workers with proper gear for safety, registering contractors with NCA and securing the areas to ensure members of the public did not access them.

“We cannot allow people to act with impunity and yet there are rules to be followed while undertaking these projects. Those who have been flouting the law in Mombasa and the Coast in general should know that we are now here and we will deal with them,” he warned.

“Buildings under construction have been collapsing, resulting to deaths and loss of property largely due to lack of adherence to statutory and other regulatory requirements, poor workmanship and gross disregard for human life. We will not allow this to continue,” he added.
