In Summary
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) will oversee the implementation of the project that will see an artificial turf installed on the football pitch.
The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has provided Sh53 million for the refurbishment of the Moi Stadium in Kisumu lending a much needed boost for the region’s sporting infrastructure.
The refurbishment of the new stadium will see the most prominent sporting arena in western Kenya elevated to international standards.
The funds are provided through FIFA’s GOAL project which is meant to facilitate FIFA member countries with funds to implement projects designed to develop football in their countries.

Speaking during the project signing ceremony at the municipal hall Thursday, FKF president Sam Nyamweya stated that the federation was turning its attention to the counties and working with local authorities to develop football in areas outside the capital.
“Our primary goal is to go to the grassroots like Mombasa, Nakuru and Kisumu and help develop football in the counties that do not have these facilities,” he said.
The move by FIFA could not have come at a better time as Kenya prepares to host this year’s edition of the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup.
The tournament brings together countries from East and Central Africa and is scheduled to begin in November this year.
FKF has stated that the tendering for the main contractor has already been done and the pitch will be ready by the time of the games.
Kisumu city mayor Sam Okello has welcome the new investment citing that it will help encourage sportsmen and women in the city.
“You have heard complaints from some quarters that our athletes are performing poorly at the 2012 London Olympics because of poor training facilities and we hope that with such facilities such accusations can be averted in future,” he said.
