Kenya headquartered Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) has enhanced its efforts of combating the Ebola virus in Liberia while boosting the country’s food security.

In an initiative targeted at smallholder farmers, AGRA has partnered with government and other stakeholders to provide quality seeds paired with Ebola prevention messages. A number of farmers in the Agriculture-dependent country had fled their fields for fear of the Ebola epidemic, leading to severe setbacks in the food basket.

“The 50MT of high yielding yellow maize seed donated will go a long way in ensuring that smallholder farmers and their families remain food secure during this difficult period of the Ebola epidemic,” said Agnes Kalibata, AGRA President.

The seeds will be distributed at no cost to the smallholder farmers in an effort to ease the financial pressures they are currently facing.
