Airtel prepay customers can now purchase GSM bundles and pay directly from their Airtel Money account as opposed to their airtime account.

This follows the launch of a new service by the telecom service provider where customers dial short codes to buy the bundles.

The move is seen as an effort by Airtel to cut a niche in the non-voice segment which has continued to drive growth in Safaricom, its main rival.

In May this year Safaricom announced its full year financial results with the data segment registering a 41 per cent growth that was attributed to increased uptake of affordable Internet bundles with 9.6 million customers.

Airtel bundles to be purchased through the newly unveiled channel include Tosha, Internet, SMS and prepaid international packs.

While announcing the new service Airtel Kenya CEO Adil El Youssefi the service offers customers a simple process to purchase bundles.

“This innovative service offers more freedom and convenience for customers using Airtel Money wherever they are on the Airtel network in Kenya,” he said.

Other services available on Airtel Money include online banking, online payment and utility bill payment for electricity, cable TV and water.
