Insurance brokerage firm Aon has activated its human resource consulting arm in Kenya, seeking to grow its top line by offering recruitment services to big and mid-sized companies in the region.

Aon Kenya said the new division —Aon Hewitt— will help the company to diversify earnings and cut reliance on insurance and re-insurance brokerage by offering a range of HR solutions that will also include outsourcing and managing employee benefits.

The Aon Hewitt Nairobi unit will act as a hub for East Africa, chasing business deals from multinationals operating across the region and beyond.

“We decided to increase our range of services in Kenya to primarily be in a position to provide more holistic solutions to the ever-increasing and complex needs of our clients,” said Sammy Muthui, chief operating officer at Aon Kenya Insurance Brokers.

“Our target market as with our other lines of business will be a special focus on large to medium-sized business for HR consulting services.” Aon Hewitt Kenyan operations is headed by Joshua Karani, who was from 2005 director in charge of HR and compliance at the insurance brokerage firm.

Mr Karani has more than 12 years experience in HR practice; and holds a Master of Science degree in management from the United States International University.

He is also a member of US-based professional body Alexander Hamilton Institute.

Aon— the world’s largest insurance brokerage firm —in 2010 acquired HR firm Hewitt Associates for $4.9 billion (Shin a cash and stock deal as a strategy to diversify its consulting operations.

Kenya’s insurance brokerage market is highly competitive with 187 brokers and 4,631 agents in a market where insurance uptake is at a low of 3.2 per cent of GDP, according to data from the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA).
