Taiwanese electronics company Asus is set to join the race for Kenya’s mobile phone buyers with the launch of a smartphone in the market.

The manufacturer has launched the Zenfone 2 as part of its expansion into Africa.

The manufacturer has also added the transformer book T300 Chi and a gaming machine to its portfolio.

Asus is faced with stiff competition from Nokia (Microsoft), Samsung and Techno who already have a hold on the local mobile phones market.

“Part of our strategy for this year will be to try and introduce locally the innovations that have already been unveiled elsewhere in more developed markets—almost concurrently. This is because we believe that consumer’s needs are becoming similar in a more globalised world” said Chris Wen, Asus Kenya country product manager.

The ZenFone was first unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. It has a display of 5.5 inches and runs on android 5.0 (lollipop) with a quad core processor and is fitted with a 13MP camera.

The device is geared to compete with the high-end Samsung Galaxy, Microsoft Lumia, Tecno Phantom and iPhone.

“The tech products in 2015 will be geared towards application of the innovative demands of the consumers as opposed to knowledge of the trends. The products that we’ll be introducing meet this demand” said Mr Wen.
