Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has tapped a Kenya Airways executive to steer its local operations as the carrier races to grow traffic in the region.

The carrier has tapped Joan Mwaniki as its first general manager for the Kenya office.

Until her appointment, Ms Mwaniki had held key positions at KQ, including as country director in Tanzania and stints in Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Etihad said it was keen on Ms Mwaniki’s experience in the region.

“Joan’s experience and extensive contacts within the East and Southern African travel industry will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our presence in this market,” said Danny Barranger, Etihad Airways vice president for global sales, in a statement Wednesday.

“I am confident that she will make a significant contribution in serving the growing numbers of guests travelling from across the region, through Nairobi to the UAE and beyond.”

Etihad, which launched daily flights to Nairobi in April 2012, is seeking to attract more passengers from Nairobi to the rest of the world through its Abu Dhabi hub.

The airline this week announced plans to open new routes, including in Africa, next year. Africa has become a lucrative market for Middle East carriers looking to connect passengers to rest of the world.

Dubai-based Emirates has been expanding aggressively taking market share from African carriers including Kenya Airways.
