Former Safaricom technical head on IEBC shortlist

John Barorot, a former head of Airtel and Safaricom’s technical departments, is among 12 candidates shortlisted for the position of director ICT at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

IEBC declared the position of the director of ICT formerly held by Dismas Ong’ondi and those of deputy CEO, Support Services (Wilson Shollei), finance director (Edward Karisa) and that of procurement manager (Willy Gachanja Kamanga) vacant in September.

Mr Ong’ondi is currently fighting his dismissal from the IEBC in the courts.

Other applicants for the position of director of ICT who have been shortlisted include Duncan Ongonji, Cephas Agola, Mbesa Malombe, Stanely Mwangi Chege, Silas Kivuti Njeru, James Muhati Buyekane, Abdulkadir Waqoo Jarsoo, Gogo Albert Nguma, Stephen Kibet Ngeno, Nyimbi Odera and Peter Wanyonyi.

Before joining Airtel Kenya, Mr Barorot was a long-serving chief technical officer with rival, Safaricom Ltd.

He quit barely two months after taking up a similar position at Airtel in 2011.

His 10-year stint at East Africa’s largest telecoms firm came to an end when the company conducted a management restructuring.
