A former CMC Motors dealer has signed a deal with General Motors East Africa (GMEA) to sell in the Kenyan market Chevrolet vehicles produced by the American automobiles manufacturer.

Pewin Motors, which was in October dropped as a CMC Motors car dealer following takeover of the company by Dubai-based Al-Futtaim, has now won the GM contract to sell and service Chevrolet Trailblazer—a sports utility vehicle — as well as the Chevrolet Cruze, Aveo and Optra, which are saloon brands.

“The drive to open up new Chevrolet outlets is in line with our business strategy to provide world-class products to the market through accessible, authorised dealers,” said Rita Kavashe, the GMEA managing director.

“We are glad to note that Pewin Motors brings into our network a strong focus on customer satisfaction that is at the core of our business,” she added.

The new owners of motor dealer CMC Holdings last year terminated the contracts of three sales agents — including Pewin— who were allegedly hired by the company’s former managers on controversial terms.

Pewin was appointed in June 2011 by CMC’s former management team that was then headed by ex-CEO Bill Lay. It was not immediately clear who hired the other agents.

The appointment of Pewin was one of the issues that sparked controversy at the motor dealer’s boardroom as some members opposed the use of commission-earning sales agents.
