Chinese IT giant Huawei Technologies is targeting county governments with its ICT security surveillance equipment, riding on a similar project it carried out in partnership with Safaricom connecting Nairobi and Mombasa CCTV cameras.

The firm’s ICT-based security equipment is used for incident prevention, emergency response and evidence collection, in a programme dubbed the Smart and Safe City.

The programme involves the use of a combination of different ICT tools like wireless network (broadband), smartphones and cloud computing, which help governments to improve public services and fight crime.

Huawei Kenya vice general manager Freddie Zhang said with its focus in counties, the ‘Smart and Safe City’ solutions are aimed at enabling them to connect to each other through an integrated service architecture that allows for information sharing and provides advanced applications and services.

“Through our investment, we hope that we would complement the government through the ICT ministry to provide all the counties with innovative ICT infrastructure,” said Mr Zhang.

He added that Huawei has capacity to set up technological systems that will connect all the counties and offer support on need basis in health, education and security sectors.

A three-day Huawei Kenya Smart roadshow is expected  to bring together over 200 industry members to share insights, development trends and global success stories on public safety in cities and discuss ways to reduce crime and reinforce safety through establishing innovative ICT safe city solution.

In 2015, through the National Police Service and Safaricom, Huawei facilitated the delivery of the ‘Safe City’ project in Nairobi and Mombasa where the CCTV surveillance cameras have been installed.

The system allows officers to share incident details securely and coordinate responses between central command and local patrols.

It also means police can store and organise surveillance data in the cloud and access, share and query it with greater ease and accuracy.

Sophisticated analytics tools improve their ability to identify, classify and match stored video.
