Billionaire businessman and director of motor dealing company CMC, Joel Kibe, has denied charges of causing death by dangerous driving.

He is also facing charges of drunk driving and causing injury by careless driving.

The businessman was released on Thursday on a Sh300,000 bond pending hearing of the case on March 30.

The prosecution wanted him denied bail, but the caught upheld his lawyer Cliff Ombeta’s submissions that there were no compelling reasons to do so.

Mr Kibe reportedly lost control of his white Range Rover, registration KBQ 959 J, and crushed into a guard house in Nairobi’s Runda estate on Monday killing a guard and injuring another.

He appeared before city magistrate Benson Nzakyo at the Milimani law courts. He skipped court on Wednesday, with his lawyer saying he was nursing injuries following the accident.

Security guard Charles Wachira, 25, who died at the scene of the accident, had flagged Kibe down for checking.

Mr Kibe was appointed chairman of CMC Holdings in 2012 but stood down the post after it was taken over by Dubai’s Al-Futtaim Group.
He remained a director of the company after the buyout.
