KQ back to regular operations after hitting headwinds

National carrier Kenya Airways has resumed normal flight operations following yesterday’s disruption after pilots made good their threat to go on strike.

Pilots suspended the organised protest last night and resumed duty with all flights scheduled for Friday morning having already departed.

“All flights scheduled for this morning, with the exception of KQ 526 to Yaoundé, which was cancelled for operational reasons, have departed. The rest of today’s scheduled flights are crewed for on time departure. We had 22 departures and six arrivals this morning,” said the airline in a statement.

The airline’s pilots on Thursday went on strike paralysing operations for several hours despite an earlier deal with management to suspend industrial action.

The strike was called off late last evening following a day-long crisis meeting with Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia and KQ chairman Dennis Awori after which it was announced that the airline’s human resource director had exited the company.

The pilots, through their union the Kenya Airline Pilots Association (Kalpa), suspended their industrial action at 8 pm, bringing to an end a day of heavy revenue losses for KQ occasioned by cancellation of over 20 flights.

“We advise all our guests to ensure they check their flights prior to departure through our KQ mobile app, website or contact centre,” said the carrier in a statement.
