Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has invited bids for shops and restaurants at its facilities at the Makadara and Imara Daima commuter train stations which are set to be launched next month.

The opening of the two intermodal railway stations is expected to ease incessant traffic jams on Mombasa Road and several others in Eastlands with the “park and ride” concept.

Under the concept Motorists will have the option of parking their cars at the stations for a train ride to the City centre.

Both Makadara and Imara Daima Railway Stations will be served by the Syokimau train which offers commute services to residents of Embakasi, Mulolongo and Kitengela estates at the Syokimau Railway Station.

The train has seven passenger coaches with a capacity of 700 people one way with KRC saying it plans to add more coaches after the opening of the new stations to cater for more commuters.

“Kenya Railways…, invites interested companies to let space at Makadara and Imara Daima Railway Stations available from December 2013,” said the State corporation in a notice on Wednesday.

The service stations on offer include small shops measuring 116 square feet to bigger ones (534 square feet) and restaurant space whose sizes range between 472 square feet and 534 square feet.

“The tenant shall be expected to undertake final finishes and set up of the space after award by the corporation,” the notice says.

The stations come along with concourse-cum-entrance lobbies, ticketing, baggage handling and travel information centres alongside prepaid card based payment system.

“The two stations will be opened early next month and preparations are in top gear ahead of launch,” Agnes Kariuki, the administrative assistant at KRC confirmed in a phone interview.

KRC is yet to determine the number of extra round trips it plans to add to the current three for the Syokimau station on expected increased use of Syokimau train by a larger population.

Alfred Matheka, the acting managing director told the Business Daily in an earlier interview that fare for commute service to town are likely to be Sh50 and Sh40 one way from Makadara and Imara Daima estates respectively.

At present, commuters pay Sh50 one way from Syokimau to city centre.

The Imara Daima station which is valued at Sh334 million, according to the then Project Manager Wilfred Ndulu, is expected to serve about 2, 000 passengers from Industrial Area and Embakasi per day.

It has parking space for about 150 cars.

The Sh455 million Makadara station, which is slightly larger will serve more than 5,000 commuters every day and will have parking space for 500 cars.

The station will link estates such as Buru Buru, Jerusalem, Jericho, Uhuru, Hamza and Jogoo Road with town.
