  • The opening of the Kitisuru branch is set to boost retail services in the flourishing Nairobi West sub-county area which is also serviced by Nakumatt Westgate, Nakumatt Village and the round-the-clock Nakumatt Highridge branches.

Residents of the affluent Kitisuru neighbourhood have got an extra shopping point after regional retailer Nakumatt Holdings opened its 61st branch in the estate.

Nakumatt Kitisuru is located at the new Kitisuru Place shopping complex.

Nakumatt recently opened the Emali branch in Emali town, along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. Nakumatt Kitisuru settles on a 10,000 square feet floor area.

“Kitisuru makes our 24th branch in Nairobi County while the opening of Nakumatt Emali in Makueni County last week now pushes the county presence to 17, further enhancing our commitment to pursue a nationwide expansion programme,” said Nakumatt Holdings regional operations and strategy director Thiagarajan Ramamurthy.

“This confirms that our expansion strategies are solidly on course.”

The opening of the two stores (Nakumatt Emali and Nakumatt Kitisuru) has boosted the firm’s local staffing workforce to more than 7,000, according to Mr Ramamurthy, making the retailer one of the top formal employers in the country.

He said that Nakumatt is braced to face the budding competition in the local retail industry with “continuous refining of business and marketing strategies.”

Nakumatt’s internal evaluations show that the local formal retail penetration rate currently stands at about 18 per cent, providing for a wide untapped market by local and international retailers eyeing the sector.

The opening of the Kitisuru branch is set to boost retail services in the flourishing Nairobi West sub-county area which is also serviced by Nakumatt Westgate, Nakumatt Village and the round-the-clock Nakumatt Highridge branches.

The retailer, however, recently suffered a blow following the closure of its prime Ukay Centre branch due to flash floods early this month. The outlet was closed indefinitely.

Nakumatt Highridge Supermarket was then made a 24-hour branch to meet the needs of customers who previously frequented Nakumatt Ukay.

Nakumatt Ukay had branded itself as an outlet where customers in Westlands, Parklands and environs (and even beyond) could walk in at any time of the day or night to buy whatever they needed.

The land on which the Ukay Centre is located has in the past caused a storm because it is allegedly riparian.

Nakumatt Ukay has been operating at the Ukay Centre’s ground and mezzanine floors.

To meet increased customer demand, the company also said that Nakumatt Westgate would also operate from seven until midnight.
