A logistics firm has given motor dealer DT Dobie a major boost after acquiring 50 new Mercedes Benz Actros trucks in a deal estimated at more than Sh600 million.

The purchase by Sanghani Transporters represents 10 per cent of total Mercedes Benz units sold in Kenya last year, which was recorded at 564 units comprising luxury cars, buses and heavy duty trucks.

The deal puts Sanghani’s fleet size at more than 400 trucks as the company positions itself to meet the growing demand for road cargo transport in Kenya and the region.

Poor performance of the railway has seen more than 90 per cent of cargo from the Mombasa port hauled on roads.

“The purchase of 50 Mercedes Actros trucks shows the high level of trust the company has for Mercedes trucks and the service support provided by DT Dobie,” Zarak Khan, the managing director of DT Dobie, said in a statement.

This transaction will help DT Dobie reverse its market share drop. Its stake of the new vehicle market dropped 12 per cent last year from 13 per cent in 2012 despite growing sales to 1,126 units from 1,081.

DT Dobie also deals in Nissan, Jeep and Hyundai brands.

General Motors East Africa, Simba Colt and CMC Holdings are some of the big players in the truck business.

GM deals in Isuzu trucks, Simba Colt (Mitsubishi Fuso) and troubled motor dealer CMC Holdings sells UD and MAN range of trucks.
