What you need to know:

  • The branches will open at 10am after interdenominational prayers that are set to start from 9am.

Nakumatt Supermarkets will this Sunday open all its East African branches late to mark the first anniversary of last year’s terror attack at the Westgate Shopping Mall where it was the anchor tenant.

The branches will open at 10am after interdenominational prayers that are set to start from 9am. Normal operations will also be disrupted later at noon to observe a minute of silence in memory of the 67 people who died in the siege at the mall and other victims of the terror attack.

“The events on that fateful Saturday mid-morning are still very painful and the entire Nakumatt fraternity shall be taking time off on Sunday to say our memorial prayers to seek God’s comfort, global peace, love and harmony,” said Atul Shah, Nakumatt’s managing director.

In Nairobi, Mr Shah will also lead Nakumatt staff to light a memorial candle outside the Westgate Shopping Mall at noon on Sunday.

One year ago, the firm suffered the loss of three of its employees who were shot at the mall. The retailer also lost its flagship Nakumatt Westgate branch to a mysterious fire just days after the terror attack.

This led to a 7.7 per cent decline in revenue in the year ended February. Nakumatt reported sales of over $600 million (about Sh52 billion) in the period, down from $650 million (Sh56.5 billion) a year earlier.

More than Sh1.5 billion worth of stock was lost in the Westgate fire.
