National Bank of Kenya (NBK) has launched its Internet and mobile banking services in a bid to increase access points for its customers in line with the industry trend.

NBK said it will be rolling out the service through its 1,300 shared agents across the country and an additional 250 who are independently managed by the bank.

“The benefit of these new platforms to our customers is that users will be able to enjoy services that include deposits over the counter, fund transfer, airtime purchase, loan repayment, including M-Pesa to bank transfer,” said Munir Ahmed, the National Bank MD on Wednesday during launch of the service.

The lender has drafted a five-year transformation programme that seeks to make it a top-tier bank by 2017.

Among the targets is to increase its customer numbers and its footprint in the market.

Internet and mobile banking services, NatConnect and NatMobile, are seeking to tap on the increased availability of broadband Internet in the country.

“The surge in mobile phone and internet usage has seen the rise in both mobile and Internet banking transaction in the last few years and that’s  the main reason National Bank found it prudent to launch the two applications,’’ said Mr Ahmed.

Through NatConnect, customers will access multiple account transfers within and to other bank accounts including international transfers while the mobile app, NatMobile will be accessible to customers using Android, IOS and Blackberry phones.

Co-operative Bank recently launched its own mobile banking service dubbed M-Coop Cash which allows customers to get loans through their phones, in a direct challenge to Safaricom’s M-Shwari and Equity Bank’s Eazzy 247 that allows customers access to bank services on the mobile phone.
