Ormat Technologies has increased the total generation capacity of Olkaria III geothermal complex in Naivasha to 110 megawatts with the completion of its third power generating unit.

OrPower 4 Inc, a wholly owned subsidiary of US firm Ormat Technologies, completed construction of the Sh3.8 billion third unit at Olkaria III almost three months ahead of schedule,  according to Ormat’s chief executive Dita Bronicki.

“With Plant III online, the complex’s total generation capacity has increased to 110 megawatts that is sold to Kenya Power under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA),” said Ms Bronicki.

The output of Ormat’s first electricity generating unit is 48MW, the second unit generates 36MW while the third has a capacity of 26MW.

Olkaria III complex was financed with a Sh26.5 billion debt facility provided by the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) of the US.

The completion of the project steps up Kenya's quest to add 5,000 megawatts to the national grid in the next 40 months to stabilise power supply in the country.
