Safaricom, Strathmore to offer training to business journalists

Safaricom has partnered with Strathmore Business School to provide a fellowship programme for journalists that will advance their business reporting capacity.

The Safaricom Business Journalism Fellowship will comprise modules of intensive four-day trainings, half-day workshops and organised events spread over one year.

Speaking during the launch of the fellowship, Safaricom's chief executive Bob Collymore said that the programme would enable journalists sharpen skills and improve the quality of financial reporting in the country.

“Journalists are windows to society in addition to being the windows of others into our society and as Kenya starts to take its place in the world, conscientious journalism is more imperative than ever,” he said.

Strathmore University’s vice chancellor Prof John Odhiambo, lamented that while business reporting contributed to inclusive and sustainable economic growth, many of those who cover the beat are not well equipped with the intricacies of the business world.

“Many reporters are at a serious disadvantage and the fellowship will help bridge the gap by creating a middle ground of understanding,” he said.
