Safaricom has launched an online platform to help young software developers to share ideas.

Zindua Café, accessible on the telecommunication company’s website, is an interactive portal designed to allow innovators and developers to share their ideas, applications and prototypes with Safaricom.

Director of strategy and innovation Joe Oguttu said the portal would structure the way through which the company receives applications and also provide transparency to the process through which developers can track progress of their submissions.

“We acknowledge that simple solutions make a huge difference not just to the economy but also to the lives of the developers and we want to encourage more of that with the portal,” said Mr Oguttu.

It is expected to help minimise suspicion that Safaricom, which receives more than 700 ideas and prototypes of innovations every year, is not honest in handling the submissions.

“Before applications would be sent to individual members of the innovation department or through the standard email and would have to go through the process of internal vetting to find out if it has been accepted or dropped, by submitting ideas with Zindua Café there is a trail and they cannot come out and say Safaricom stole their idea,” he said.
