Strathmore University has been hit by a bout of food poisoning which has landed dozens of students and staff in hospital.

The students and staff are admitted at various hospitals in Nairobi.

The affected are part of a group of about 300 fourth year students who had attended a seniors dinner last Friday, according to a memo sent out by the university.

About half sought medical attention after the event, with the university medical centre reportedly handling at least 80 cases.

“This is to let you know of the regrettable incident of food poisoning that occurred last Friday to our 4th year students and staff members who attended the seniors dinner,” read the memo dispatched by Betty Ngala, the university relations director.

“The university is fully aware of this matter, and has taken charge to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff,” the memo read in part.

The university has not given the name of the food caterer, but said the catering firm was outsourced and that investigations have been launched to establish the cause of the food poisoning.

Food samples and patients’ results have been collected for analysis at the Kenya Medical Research Institute.

“Our faculty members are working to ascertain the number of students affected,” said Ms Ngala.

Kammie Mutegi, one of the affected students said: ‘‘It’s been two days and I am not well.’’
