Suspended National Oil CEO Sumayya Hassan-Athmani has been reinstated, Deputy President William Ruto said Tuesday in Malindi.

However, the corporation's board is still conducting an audit which may eventually decide her fate at the parastatal.

The Deputy President made the announcement on Monday evening at a meeting with the Muslim community from Malindi constituency.

Mr Ruto is in the constituency to drum up support for the Jubilee Alliance Party candidate Phillip Charo. He has been meeting various groups and addressing a series of public rallies since his arrival on Monday afternoon to seek votes for Mr Charo.

Ms Hassan's suspension has been a campaign issue with the opposition using it as a demonstration that "the government has no regard" for Malindi people.

Mr Ruto however dismissed the claims as propaganda.
