Tanzania and Uganda agree to speed up railway project

The minister for Transport, Mr Omari Nundu, and his Ugandan counterpart, Mr Abraham Byandala, gave the assurance at the weekend when they arrived to Tanga from a week-long tour of Kampala, Musoma, Korogwe to inspect the project areas.
Mr Nundu said that $3 billion would be set aside for the project which would also involve upgrading the Tanga and Musoma ports in Tanzania.
Residents of Mwambani area in Tanga have already pocketed compensation to vacate the area which has been earmarked for the expansion of Tanga Port.
Mr Nundu said there must be frameworks which will guarantee transparency and accountability in the execution of the multi-million dollars project, saying that spirited attempts by some nationals to forsake their land plots for the construction of the project, was highly appreciated.
He said the people of Musoma have offered the project a free land plot sized 400 hectares for the construction of the port, while the residents of Tanga had allowed their 170 hectares of land for the project.
For his part, the Ugandan minister pledged 800 hectares to the project offered by the residents of Kampala for the construction of the port of Ukasa.
The Uganda delegation comprised its high commissioner to Tanzania, Ibrahim Bukiimbi, who met various officials from the Tanzania Ports Authority and Tanzania Railways Limited. The group visited the proposed port to be built at Ndumi ara. They later toured the present port.
