Kenya Airways has trailed regional rivals South African Airways and Ethiopian Airlines in the 2016 Skytrax World Airline Awards.

South African Airways was named the best regional airline in the consumer-voted awards followed closely by Air Seychelles and Air Mauritius which beat the Ethiopian carrier.

The consumer-voted awards were announced at the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom on Tuesday last week.

Kenya Airways, whose slogan is the pride of Africa, polled as the fifth best airline on the continent. The national carrier was ranked 85th among the top 100 global airlines, moving up one slot from last year.

The latest ranking falls behind the overall best position of 78 achieved in 2012. The financially troubled national carrier has in the recent past faced increased competition from rival airlines covering key routes across Africa.

Kenya Airways’ staff were ranked the sixth best behind the other top regional carriers and Royal Air Maroc. Passengers voted the staff of Ethiopian Airlines as the best in Africa while the South African carrier’s employees were second.

KQ reported a Sh25.7 billion after-tax loss for the year ended March 2015, followed by a Sh10.95 billion net loss for the six months to September.
