A US mobile phone payments firm is recruiting managers to run its Nairobi office in a reflection of increasing global recognition for the rapidly growing industry.

Point-of-sale (PoS) terminal maker, VeriFone, is hiring staff to drive its mobile money business across Africa from its Nairobi hub, joining a list of global firms eyeing a piece Kenya’s lucrative mobile financial industry.

The California-based multinational is seeking executives to head its joint venture dubbed VeriFone Mobile Money, with plans to roll out mobile money-enabled PoS gadgets targeting retail payments.

VeriFone Mobile Money wants to hire a regional sales director for Africa, a senior commercial manager and technical services manager who will be tasked with recruiting merchants and deploying PoS terminals that accept mobile as well as ‘tap and go’ payments.

Negotiating contracts

“This role will proactively develop and manage customer relationships, and work with the territory sales, and merchant acquisition teams to achieve target volumes and margins,” VeriFone Mobile Money said in a notice outlining responsibilities for the regional sales director.

The senior commercial manager will be responsible ‘‘for reviewing and negotiating contracts and managing commercial terms with customers,’’ the company said.

“This role will involve retail Enablement Software and Billing Software Patch installation and testing of services,” read the role of the technical services manager.

VeriFone Mobile Money is a partnership between VeriFone Inc. and New Zealand-based software maker Mobilis Networks.

The company provides mobile phone-based payment services targeted at telcos, banks, money transfer agents, public transport companies and retailers.

VeriFone becomes the third global company to train its eyes on Kenya’s multi-billion dollar mobile money industry, boosting Nairobi’s credential as a top Africa financial technology hub.

Ericsson in December last year opened the search for a mobile financial services consultant to help the Swedish firm develop and deploy m-commerce apps integrating financial services offered by telcos and banks.

Global wire transfer firm SWIFT has also announced plans to open a regional hub in Nairobi this year, saying it will focus on developing and integrating mobile money platforms across Africa.

The volume of cash sent through mobile platforms grew by a quarter to gross Sh2.3 trillion last year —which is equivalent to half of Kenya’s newly rebased GDP.
