Court declines to grant reprieve to alcohol manufacturers

A High Court judge on Tuesday declined to grant reprieve orders to a group challenging the manner in which raids were being conducted in the campaign against illicit liquor.

Justice Isaac Lenaola refused to heed to the Association of Spirits Manufacturers’ request to intervene in stopping blanket condemnation and give proper guidelines on the war against illicit liquor.

Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu, who was present, through his lawyers told the court that the group had not indicated who its officials were, attached any official document or presented a stamp of certification to prove its credibility as required by law.

Justice Lenaola ordered the group to present documents tomorrow (Wednesday) indicating that it is a credible organisation.

He also ordered the association to appear in court with a licence showing that it's registered as well as presenting a list of its members to prove that they are certified to manufacture alcoholic drinks.
