The controversial “doctor” James Mugo Ndichu, charged with rape, administering a sedative and operating unregistered clinics, has been granted bail by a Nairobi court.

Nairobi chief magistrate Daniel Ogembo released Mr Ndichu alias Mugo wa Wairimu on a Sh5 million bond with a surety of a similar amount with an alternative of Sh1 million cash bail.

The magistrate also warned Mr Ndichu against contacting witnesses in the case against him, saying the bond would be cancelled should he disobey the order.

Mr Ndichu was on Friday charged with one count of rape, administering a sedative and 10 counts of operating unregistered clinics.

The accused, who owns several clinics in Nairobi, is alleged to have sedated and raped a woman in one of his clinics. He already has a separate case of practising without authority that is pending at the Makadara Law Courts.

Mr Ndichu has been in police custody since September 11 after his sensational arrest, sparked by public outrage over a video showing a man sexually abusing a sedated woman.

The case will be mentioned on October 19.
