  • The hearings will run to Thursday when the House is expected to determine whether the charges to have been substantiated, Speaker Ekwee Ethuro said in his communication to the House.

Senate will today commence sittings to hear Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua on allegations of abuse of office, corruption and gross violation of the Constitution in procurement.

Both the governor and the County Assembly of Nyeri are expected to appear before the full House hearings which will be conducted in public.

The hearings will run to Thursday when the House is expected to determine whether the charges to have been substantiated, Speaker Ekwee Ethuro said in his communication to the House.

On conclusion, the Senate will adjourn to a deliberative closed session then re-assemble in plenary and vote on each of the charges. Speaker Ethuro has in the meantime barred Senators from discussing Gachagua’s proposed removal from office in forums outside Parliament.

The decision to hold the hearings in plenary was arrived at after a motion by Leader of Majority Kithure Kindiki to establish an 11-member Special Committee to look into the matter was unanimously shot down.

Court injunction

An attempt by the Council of Governors to seek a court injunction against Senate on Mr Gachagua was declined.

“The High Court cannot interfere with our role of legislation, representation and oversight because that is insulated under law. Let that be so known,” said Minority Leader Moses Wetangula during a special sitting by the House last week.
