Indian warships dock in Mombasa on fresh maritime ties with Kenya

Three warships belonging to Indian Navy Western Fleet are set to dock at the Mombasa port Friday to mark renewal of maritime security co-operation with Kenya.

The warships are on a three-day visit to Mombasa during which the Indian security personnel will share experience and forge partnership in war on maritime terrorism and piracy with their Kenyan counterpart.

The visit comes a month after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kenya in July with an aim of creating a stronger presence in the country.
During the visit, Kenya and India signed a memorandum of understanding on defence co-operation and agreed to deepen existing ties.

“The current visit seeks to strengthen the existing bonds of friendship between India and Kenya and underscore India’s peaceful presence and solidarity with friendly countries of the Indian Ocean region,” Indian High Commission to Kenya said in a statement yesterday.

India last made its naval visit in 2014 when three warships visited Mombasa as part of overseas deployment.

The Asian state has also carried out hydrographic survey in Kenya’s portion of Indian Ocean and trained Kenyan Naval personnel in India.

“In addition to professional interactions, the ships, during their stay in harbour, will undertake several other activities, including official interactions and cultural engagements.

“The ships would also be open to public for onboard visits on Sunday afternoon while organised visits for schoolchildren will also be conducted during mid-morning.”
