Jubilee Insurance Company has paid Sh30 million to families of three ministers who died while in office.

The company paid compensation of Sh10 million for each minister, under the MPs’ Life Assurance Scheme, following the deaths of Mr John Michuki, Prof George Saitoti, and his assistant Mr Orwa Ojode.

Prof Saitoti and Mr Ojode’s families will also receive Sh10 million each from Kenindia Assurance Company under the Group Personal Accident cover.

Speaker Kenneth Marende said that the prompt payment of the claims would help the families to recover. Mr Michuki died from ill health in February while he was serving as the Environment minister.

Prof Saitoti and Mr Ojode died in a helicopter crash three weeks ago. They served as Minister for Internal Security, and deputy minister in the same docket respectively.

The MPs were covered under the Life Benefit Scheme for the 224 members.

On Thursday, Jubilee chief executive Patrick Tumbo presented the cheque to Mr Marende and Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr Patrick Gichohi, in Nairobi.

“We know that in insurance payment of premiums by clients is easy but payment of claims by insurers is very difficult. At least Jubilee has shown that it’s different,” Mr Marende said.

He asked Kenyans to appreciate the benefits of insurance by taking up covers.
