The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) digitised tax collection system, which is linked to 37 commercial banks, processed transactions worth Sh280 billion in just five months.

KRA commissioner-general John Njiraini said between January 1 and June 8 this year, the iTax platform’s payment gateway featured more than 3.5 million active taxpayers.

KRA has consequently won the Highly Commended Winner, Best in Class Treasury Solution in Africa award by the Treasury Today’s Adam Smith Awards 2016.

Global excellence

KRA has managed domestic and customs tax collections via iTax with local corporate bank Citi processing more than 20 per cent of its total tax collection in the last financial year.

The payment  gateway allows local corporates and individual  taxpayers to conveniently file their returns  and settle their  tax dues through the linked local commercial banks network.

Mr Njiraini said the award underlines the authority’s commitment to global excellence in revenue collection.

KRA  won  the  Africa  Category  title  from  a  pool  of  more  than  219 nominations from 19 countries across the world.

Other winners included Etihad Airways, Coca-Cola, HBC AG, Toyota Motor Credit Corporation, Microsoft, Volvo Cars, Boeing, Rolls Royce Holdings Plc and Majid Al Futtaim Holding LLC.

KRA had submitted a case  study  on  the successful rollout  of  the iTax.
