The Kenya National Highways Authority will spend Sh363.1 million to put up two footbridges on Mombasa Road in a bid to curb the increasing number of pedestrian fatalities along the busy highway.

The pedestrian bridges, to be constructed at Bellevue and General Motors; will come as a relief to residents along the main road who have had to risk their lives crossing the highway.
The contract to develop the footbridges has been awarded to H Young & Co and the facilities will be completed by April next year.

“We hope to deliver these footbridges in eight months to check the road carnage at these points especially on pedestrians crossing,” said Meshack Kidenda, director general at Kenha, at the ground breaking ceremony Thursday.

The Bellevue pedestrian bridge connecting South B and South C will cost Sh177.3 million while the one at General Motors will cost taxpayers Sh185.8 million.

Mr Kidenda also disclosed that the agency plans to construct an additional 10 footbridges along the Thika Superhighway to complement the existing 18 crossings.
