CPS Research International, a market and social survey firm, has ranked Kenyatta University top among Kenyan learning institutions that have invested in sports.
KU scored 223 points out of the maximum 300, beating 55 other universities in a 2016 survey released in Nairobi Wednesday.
CPS Director of Research Herman Manyora said the institution has invested heavily in sports.
“KU has magnificent sports facilities, both indoor and outdoor, and offers the highest sporting activities than any other university,” said Prof Manyora.
University of Nairobi came second and was followed by United States International University-Africa, while Mount Kenya University (MKU) was fourth.
Offer scholarships
Prof Manyora said that KU has invested heavily in sports in the majority of its campuses, unlike many universities which invest minimally outside their main campuses.
The study also found out that MKU offers sports scholarships, has adequate sports tutors and coaches, two dedicated buses for sporting activities and participates competitively not just in national and regional sports but also internationally.
Others were Strathmore University, Moi University, Egerton University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, University of Eldoret and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology.
The study also revealed that unlike public universities, most private universities offer sports scholarships. “Majority of public universities have no fitness centres unlike many private ones. Majority of public universities don’t provide insurance cover for their sports students unlike private ones,” added the study.
The research, conducted between April 1 and July 15 this year, was support by Pan African Education Trust with 55 universities out of the 70 listed by the Commission for University Education participating.
Constituent colleges of both public and private universities were left out. Out of the 55, 45 were ranked leaving out the 10 which either failed to offer information as requested or did not offer sporting activities at all.
