David was more sympathetic and it was soon decided that I would henceforth carry the cash and settle the bills. This decision had the twin advantages of buying me respect so to speak and deterring the quotation of inflated prices.

It was also gratifying to see front-office staff at a hotel at the coast drop their jaws when I asked to see the manager and explained that I wished to settle the bill as my guests and I were leaving early due to the less than professional attitude of his staff.

He apologised profusely and offered a substantial discount, which I accepted.
