Embattled Sports Cabinet Secretary Ali Wario has been summoned by Parliament after complaints were raised by athletes who participated in the just concluded Rio Olympics Games.

The Labour and Social Welfare Committee wants Mr Wario to explain the role of the ministry in preparations and management of sportsmen before, during and after the Brazil games.

“We have deemed it necessary to summon Mr Wario to appear before us on Tuesday,” David Were, who chairs the committee, told MPs in a status report on the Olympics Games.

“We also want him to explain the rationale and the legitimacy of his decision to disband the National Olympics Organising Committee (NOCK) , its repercussions and the court cases instituted against top sports officials after the Rio debacle.”

Mr Were, together with three members of the committee -Dan Wanyama, John Kobado and Cornelly Serem- were in Rio to watch the games.

He said his team, which was invited on the trip by the ministry, received complaints such as lack of ticketing, accreditation, sports gear, accommodation and allowances during their stay in Rio.

He said the committee arranged a meeting with Mr Wario and his principal secretary as well as other officials during which the ministry reiterated that it procured tickets for all participants in good time and distanced itself from the issue of uniforms and preparation saying the NOCK was responsible.

“On uniforms, NOCK blamed US sports gear maker Nike for delay delivery. The first uniforms came in June for Rugby team while the rest came late when the team had already departed to Rio,” he said.

But pressed to provide a contract signed with Nike for provision of sports gear to Kenyan athletes, Mr Were said the ministry and the NOCK were unable to provide such documents.

Pressure has been mounting on Mr Wario with MPs and athletes calling for his sacking.
