Moses Kuria to remain locked up

A Nairobi court has detained Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria pending a ruling on bail in a new case in which he is charged with incitement to violence.

Mr Kuria remains locked up at the Kilimani Police station till Friday when chief magistrate Daniel Ogembo will determine whether to grant him bail.

The politician has been charged over the infamous "panga" remarks he allegedly made while addressing a crowd in his constituency.

Charges facing Mr Kuria state that on June 26 at Gatundu Stadium, he uttered words in Kikuyu translated to mean that "it was desirable to bring death and physical injury to persons in Kenya."

The offensive words read out in court were that "If I get somebody, let me tell you and that is why I told you to come with your pangas. Those pangas are not only meant for clearing ...have you heard, somebody like that you slash first."

He is alleged to have been urging the youth to attack politicians opposed to the National Youth Service (NYS) projects.

Bail terms were vehemently opposed in court with the prosecution applying that the politician be detained until the case be heard and determined given that he had in the past repeated the offense after being let out on bail.
