In Summary
- Guys are curious to find out that I am leaving and where I am going to and why I am leaving. It is also amazing the kind of things that people tell you once you know that you are leaving.
- The HR boss called me saying, “Is there anything we can do to make you change your mind? We can review your pay package?” I politely told her, “I doubt there is much you can do because I have made up my mind.” I was taken aback when she went on said, “listen, before you dismiss me why don’t you take some time and think about what we have to offer.”
- I had no choice but to listen attentively as she told me that they would “review my salary upwards by 30 per cent and up my bonus and throw in a company car.”
- I got home at around 7pm and found that Shiro was already home. I told her that I wanted to talk about the offer I had gotten. So I gave her all the details of the offer I had received. She paused for a few minutes and told me, “I do not think you should take this counter-offer. It is not good for your career.”
Now that the news of my resignation is out, I have been fielding numerous calls from my colleagues.
Guys are curious to find out that I am leaving and where I am going to and why I am leaving. It is also amazing the kind of things that people tell you once you know that you are leaving.
Some guy from the head office called me and told me, “Josephat, I am surprised that you are leaving, I thought you were being groomed to take over as CEO.” I had to laugh and say, “That is news to me!”
I was telling him the truth because I always felt that I was always treated roughly and badly by the bosses. But that is now behind me. The HR boss called me saying, “Is there anything we can do to make you change your mind? We can review your pay package?” I politely told her, “I doubt there is much you can do because I have made up my mind.”
I was taken aback when she went on said, “listen, before you dismiss me why don’t you take some time and think about what we have to offer.”
I had no choice but to listen attentively as she told me that they would “review my salary upwards by 30 per cent and up my bonus and throw in a company car.”
I could not believe my ears that now that I am leaving, the company was willing to plead with me to stay.
The HR lady told me, “you go home and sleep over it and then we can chat about it tomorrow. I will call you early in the day and we can discuss.”
Under normal circumstances, I would not have given much attention to the offer, but the issue of Shiro and my marriage is nagging at the back of my mind.
In all honesty, I am not too comfortable with the idea of Shirobeing in one town and I in the other, “what If some guy makes a move on her? How will she stay faithful? And even I know I will not get tempted while in the city alone.”
I decided that this time I would discuss with Shiro what was on offer before she started yet another fight.
I opted to fortify myself with a few drinks in a nearby pub. I got home at around 7pm and found that Shirowas already home. I told her that I wanted to talk about the offer I had gotten.
She initially was hostile and said, “Why do you want to discuss this now, yet you made the other decision without asking me.” So I told her, “I learnt the folly of my ways that is why we are discussing.”
So I gave her all the details of the offer I had received. She paused for a few minutes and told me, “I do not think you should take this counter-offer. It is not good for your career.”
I was taken aback, how could she tell me not to take an offer that would guarantee our being together. She gave me a long lecture about it, “Taking a counteroffer will make management think you have no spine and can be bribed with cash. If you have decided to leave then you must leave. Do not change your mind.”
