Vienna Court, an office complex located in Nairobi, has bagged a global award for being a ‘green’ building that promotes values such as energy conservation and recycling.

The low-rise office block — currently being developed by PDM Holdings, an affiliate of the Aga Khan Development Network — won the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (Leed) Gold pre-certification.

The commercial facility on State House Crescent was feted for features such as rainwater harvesting, solar control glass, balconies with solar shading, one-acre lush garden and underground car park according to Washington DC-based US Green Building Council which runs the awards.

“A high performing and energy efficient building greatly affects a buyer’s decision about purchasing or renting a property. Leed-certified buildings have proven to have lower operating costs and better indoor and outdoor environmental quality and are more attractive to a growing group of corporate, public and individual buyers,” said Gideon Ngure, marketing manager at PDM Holdings.

The Sh2.5 billion Vienna Court, which is due to be complete in July, comprises two crescent-shaped office wings wrapped around a lush garden with cascading waterfalls weaving around it.

The Leed green building rating system is meant to challenge property developers to invest in environmentally friendly buildings both for commercial and residential use.

Past winners of the Leed award include Garden City, Strathmore University, World Bank’s Delta Centre, and Eaton Place in Gigiri.
