Namwamba survives vote of no confidence

Budalang’i MP Ababu Namwamba Thursday survived a motion of no confidence to retain the chairmanship of the powerful Public Accounts Committee (PAC) which has been rocked by corruption allegations.

Mr Namwamba emerged from a six-hour stormy session to declare that “truth had prevailed over malice and political witch-hunt”.

He has been facing impeachment proceedings over alleged corruption and doctoring PAC recommendations to suit those under investigations.

However, those who wanted him removed polled a vote less than the required threshold of 14. PAC members who wanted their chairman removed secured 13 votes against nine from MPs who backed Mr Namwamba. House rules require 50 plus one vote to remove committee chairperson.

PAC vice chairperson Cecily Mbarire, who signed the petition for the chairman’s removal abstained from voting, denying the petitioners numbers to oust him. Mr Stephen Manoti, who also signed the petition, is abroad on Parliamentary matters.
