Ceramic tiles are finding space on modern kitchen and bathroom walls, creating beautiful borders, backsplashes and counter tops. Interior decorators are pushing the design envelope, giving rooms a contemporary look.

Michelle Langi, an interior designer at Dassa By Design says mosaics give a beautiful visual appearance compared to ceramic tiles which are plain and dull.

“But most people opt to use them to complement ceramic tiles because they are expensive. They break the pattern by either arranging them horizontally or vertically,” says Ms Langi.

Available designs

From coloured glass, stone, coral, metal to stone and glass combinations, home owners have many materials and designs to choose from.
Coral mosaic and metal mosaics are great on any surface in your home.

Mosaic tiles come plain and coloured that will make your kitchen backsplash a uniquely designed masterpiece, breathing new life into your walls.

This classic tile style is popular in all types of kitchen and bathroom designs as it gives visual diversity, colour and appeal to any space.

Mosaics are also moving into the living rooms even hotel rooms, customised in unique designs to take the place of art.

But the mosaic tiles require special care and patience to put up. This is because they are come in boxes of one by one foot tiles which have seven complimentary colours and need to be carefully arranged like a puzzle.

Stone mosaic

Natural stone is timeless and is a unique material which has been around for thousands of years.

Its mosaic designs are mostly available in marble, granite, limestone, travertine, slate, and quartzite. Stone mosaics are processed, polished and bound to form mosaic palates which can be used in many ways.

They come in multiple patterns that give your walls a unique blend of colour and texture. These are perfect for fireplaces, floors, showers areas in both commercial and residential houses.

They are available in many finishes including polished, honed brushed, antique and split face.

Glass mosaic

Stained glass is the most common type of glass tiled mosaics which gives a home a colonial and yet a modern feel.

Glass tiles give your walls a unique appearance which is rarely achieved with conventional tiles and the dazzling appearance takes many years to fade.

The vibrancy and depth of colour combined with the reflective quality of glass results in a unique and dramatic effect, whether used in homes or modern offices or hotels.

Most glass mosaic tiles can be used both indoors and outdoors and are not affected by harsh weather like frost, sun or water. They are easy to clean, maintain, and they never discolour; making them perfect in areas used often.

Glass tiles can be used on the kitchen walls, bathrooms, borders in any room to soften conventional ceramic tiled walls, highlight external building features, and on garden walls.

Metal mosaic

Metal mosaics such as the stainless steel, aluminium and copper mosaic help make your backsplash modern. They come in different patterns and sizes and provide a modern aesthetic.

The tiles can be mounted vertically or horizontally depending on the type of effect you want to achieve. Aluminium mosaic tiles provide the look of stainless steel metal mosaic tiles, but with added texture and durability.

These tiles are best used in stainless steel kitchen backsplashes.

Coral mosaic

Coral mosaics are rich in design, vibrant in colour, and beautiful in texture. The coral range offers marble, iridescent and gold fleck finishes depending on the mosaic you choose.

They are also mostly used in swimming pools, spas and waterfalls.

With the use of effective spot lighting, colour mosaic tiles can turn the most undesirable of areas into stunning and dazzling works of art.
