The school term dates will be extended by one week in the wake of a five-week strike by teachers in a pay row.

Education secretary Jacob Kaimenyi said on Tuesday that there will be no mid-term break to allow for completion of the syllabus within the term set to run up to end of November.

“The remaining time will be covered in the subsequent terms. It is also necessary to cover bits of the syllabus affected by the teachers’ strike so there will be no mid-term this term,” he said during the launch of the Basic Education Statistical Booklet in Nairobi.

Prof Kaimenyi said that the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination is on schedule.

He had earlier shrugged off calls by the Kenya National Union of Teachers and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers to postpone examination dates for the tutors to prepare the candidates adequately.

Teachers went on strike on the first day of the third term after the government declined to honour a pay rise of between 50 and 60 per cent awarded by the High Court.

The teachers resumed work this week following a High Court ruling.

Justice Nelson Abuodha directed they comply with an earlier court ruling directing them to go back to class as they negotiate a settlement to the pay dispute over the next 90 days.
