Why not go online and buy the ticket?

The growth of mobile and plastic money and increased Internet penetration have made it easy for people to buy tickets online be they for an entertainment event or a business seminar.

Online ticketing is taking root in the country with websites being set up to facilitate event organisers’ selling of tickets.

PesaPal’s Ticketsasa.com and Safaricom’s M-Pesa ticketing platform are some of the local websites offering online sale of tickets.

“People are buying online, we know it’s an area that will grow,” Agosta Liko, PesaPal’s Business Development manager, said.

“The reception has been good so far.”

Betty Mwangi-Thuo, Safaricom’s general manager financial services, said the service provides an opportunity to receive payments electronically, thus enhancing security and convenience for both the organiser and customer.

Online ticketing is efficient, allowing event organisers track sales and monies collected thus reducing cash handling and heavy traffic at the door of the event.

Ticketsasa was launched in August 2010 through selling tickets for the Concours d’Elegance event.

Since then it has done over 100 events including Safari Sevens, Tusker Lite Experience, All That Jazz With Aaron Rimbui, theatre plays, and some of the New Year parties across the country.

Mr Liko said that most of the events are up-market, targeting people with disposable income who have access to the Internet.

Most Internet bookings are done during office hours.

The website is not mobile enabled, Mr Liko said. It allows customers to buy tickets online using mobile payment options including Safaricom’s M-Pesa, Yu Cash, and Airtel Money as well as debit and credit cards.
