Siaya Senator James Orengo appeared at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters in Nairobi yesterday to answer questions about alleged irregular acquisition of land in Lamu County.

Mr Orengo spent more than two hours at the headquarters, where he had been summoned, and is said to have been shown documents relating to the 500,000 acres of land acquired by 22 organisations. He was accompanied by senators Johnstone Muthama (Machakos) and Boni Khalwale (Kakamega) and MPs Junet Mohamed of Suna East and David Ochieng (Ugenya).

The senator is expected to record a formal statement today morning.

Mr Orengo was the Lands minister when some of the alleged irregular allocations took place. He has, however, previously denied having had a hand in the transactions saying that he did not sign any allotment documents or allocate land to a person.

The land includes the area earmarked for the development of a key infrastructure project, the Lamu Port-Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (Lapsset) corridor.

In August President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the revocation of title deeds issued to the alleged grabbers. He said the land had been acquired between April and November 2012 despite a moratorium on transfers of public land.

The President then directed police and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the allocation with a view to prosecuting those culpable. On Saturday, National Land Commission officials met President Kenyatta at State House ,Nairobi and said they would revoke the titles.

The commissioners, led by chairman Mohamed Swazuri, said they would assess the situation on the ground before issuing a revocation order within a week.
