Carrying a bag is the surest way of staying organised and keeping all your documents together, although the idea of carrying one to the office does not sit well with most men.
However, some occasions such as travelling, going to the gym or class demand that one carries a bag and while some bags pair well with both office and casual wear, others are made for specific occasions. Therefore, when selecting a bag, men should consider its practicality, functionality and masculinity as you don’t want to be mistaken by carrying a feminine bag around.
The briefcase
Briefcases are probably the oldest form of acceptable handbags for men. However, briefcases have evolved from the traditional hard rectangular cases we used to know and are now available in soft leather and often come with shoulder straps.
However, they have maintained some classic elements such as the leather exterior, and practical interior compartments that make this bag a timeless addition to any working man’s wardrobe. The soft leather cases expand easily and it is possible to cram more items into them.
It is ideal for the modern-day gentleman to carry around his laptop and a handful of papers in a briefcase. Black leather briefcases are perfect for the office wear, while canvas is good for casual use.
The Duffel/Holdall bag
Duffel bags can perform multiple functions while still retaining an element of style. They are ideal for the gym goer but can also do for a weekend-getaway. A medium-sized leather bag in brown is the best option to accompany a casual or official wear.
The Backpack
The backpack is hands-free, triggers minimal fuss and is capable of holding a fair amount of stuff. It is the ideal choice for a sartorial student, a casual office goer or an everyday bike rider.
Also known as a rucksack or moneybag, a backpack is reliable and comfortable, but should never accompany formal wear. The bag is spacious and can accommodate a lot of things. It can be used for travel (when there is no other option).
The Tote
The tote can pack a bunch, easily fitting a laptop, a camera, magazines and notepads. The Male Tote bag may be shunned for having a rather feminine look but settle on a rugged, durable material like canvas, leather or suede to add a touch of masculinity.
Another way to counter the feminine look is to opt for a version where the handles are long enough to be carried over the shoulders rather than in the hands. The bag goes well with business and casual wear.
Messenger bag
Often made of canvas and swung across the shoulder, the messenger bag has taken on a whole new space in urban fashion. From students with canvas bags to urban hipsters with modern leather bags, the messenger’s laid-back style will always have a classic, casual flair. However, the leather messenger tote exudes a hint of sophistication making it ideal for the office.
Newsboy bag
Like the newsboy cap, the newsboy bag is a classic style icon that has become synonymous with men’s casual wear. It’s similar to the messenger bag style, but its traditional canvas exterior makes it a little less formal than the former. This fashion statement bag style is perfect for the student on the go and exudes more masculinity and style savviness than a rucksack. It is the oldest kind of bag in existence and is usually used for casual occasions.

We all have this bag in some shape or form. It is meant for travelers with a lot to carry. A luggage bag with wheels and of a neutral colour like navy, grey or black is a good choice for any journey that requires heavy packing.
