Logistics firm Siginon has been allowed to release the 5,000 tonnes of made-tea held up in its warehouse after its licence was suspended.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Authority (Affa) says the temporary window should enable the logistics firm clear stocks stored before the suspension of its permit.

“We have just given them a temporary window to clear the stocks they are holding so their customers may not suffer on behalf of the service provider,” said Affa director-general Saul Busolo.

Licence suspended

Mr Busolo noted the Siginon licence remains suspended until it is cleared by the ministry of Agriculture.

He said the firm had not submitted all the required documents at the time of the interview.

Siginon’s licence was suspended over its alleged role in the illegal export of Sh600 million worth of elephant tusks intercepted in Thailand last month. The suspension prohibited the logistics firm from either storing tea in its warehouses or transporting the same.

Siginon had requested the ministry for a window to enable it export the tea stocks.

“We are at a crossroads as the five million kilos in our warehouse belong to buyers abroad yet we cannot move them because we do not have the permission to do so,” said Siginon managing director Meshack Kipturgo.
